Gas Pump Transactions

An article written by Christopher Solomon and appearing on Moneycentral, outlined something that is not well known to consumers.

Lately the popularity of Visa, MasterCard, or American Express branded debit cards has experienced. These types of cards are also tied to your bank’s checking account and are also called check cards.

However, what reporter Solomon discovered was that when paying at gas pumps with these types of card as “credit” instead of “debit” that requires a pin to be punched in, a $75 hold is placed on your account, in addition to the amount of gas being bought.

This might be fine for someone who has more than enough money to cover their purchases, but for other people who have recently written a check in a large amount for rent, mortgage, or utilities, this hold could result in you having your check "bounce" if there are not enough funds to cover it. Also your bank might further charge you a “bounced” check fee.

The article goes on to recommend that consumers to use their check cards inside the gas station or it is better to use their credit cards instead.
